Located in the south-western region of Queensland, Balonne is a local government area with its administrative centre in the town of St George. This region holds a significant role in the history and development of Australia.

The traditional owners of the land are the Indigenous people belonging to the Mandandanji and Kooma tribes. They lived in the area for thousands of years and thrived off the land that was rich with natural resources like water, fish, and food.

The area of Balonne was first explored by European settlers in 1844. It was named after the river that runs through it, the Balonne River, which was named by explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell after the Native word for "large lagoon". The town of St George owes its existence to the establishment of a police station along the Balonne River.

During the late 19th century, the area saw an influx of European explorers, pastoralists, and farmers who were attracted to the region's rich natural resources. They started to develop the land for agricultural purposes, grazing livestock, and farming crops. Cotton, wheat, and sheep were some of the significant agricultural industries in the region, and it quickly became an important source of food and raw materials for the whole country.

Despite the significant role of Balonne in the development of Australia, the region also suffered from significant floods that occurred in 1990, 1996, and 2010-2011. The floods caused extensive damage to the crops, infrastructure, and homes in the area, leading to significant losses for the residents of Balonne.

Today, Balonne is a town that still thrives off its agricultural industries, and farming and grazing continue to be the primary sources of income for the region. Wine-making is also an emerging industry in the area, with several wineries producing high-quality wines.

The culture of Balonne is deeply ingrained in the agricultural traditions that dominate its economy. Many annual events, such as the agricultural show and the cotton festival, celebrate the agricultural heritage of the region. These events provide a unique opportunity for people to come together, share their experiences, and celebrate their history.

Overall, the local history of Balonne is one of growth, development, and resilience. The region has overcome significant challenges, from natural disasters to economic downturns and has emerged as a vital player in the Australian economy.
