The Balonne district's notable lives include a stockman who won a famous footrace and a soldier who later bought a property near Dirranbandi. These connections belong to particular communities within the shire rather than a generic claim of being “Balonne-born”.
🏃 Tom Dancey
Tom Dancey was born at Hebel and moved with his family to Dirranbandi, where he worked as a stockman and boundary rider. In 1910 he won the Stawell Gift, taking his running ability from station life to one of Australia's best-known professional footraces. A sculpture unveiled at Dirranbandi Railway Park in 2011 commemorates his achievement. His story belongs to the district's working and sporting history, with local recognition arriving long after the winning run.
🎖️ William Grant
Soldier and grazier William Grant bought Corack, a property near Dirranbandi, in 1934. His earlier military career included command of the 4th Light Horse Brigade during the successful charge at Beersheba in 1917. Born in Victoria and trained in engineering, he had moved into pastoral work before the First World War. The Balonne connection comes later in that life: a local grazing property after a career that had carried him through Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine.
